« WHAT IF?
What if Erik Satie abandoned his eternal off-stage and showed up at the musical-culinary party à deux of his artist-friends John Cage and Hans Otte? Because of the inner connection between music, sounds and silence, verbal and sensual visual pleasures, composers, performers and audience, a poetic marriage of all these ingredients would emerge live onstage.
ACTION
John Cage and Hans Otte meet in Cage's loft on Sixth Avenue in New York in the Autumn of 1991. John has invited his composer friend Hans from Bremen, Germany for a "Gastmahl (party) à deux". On a whim, they play piano music for each other. They listen, laugh, and together prepare the unusual ingredients for the special three-course menu planned by the host. To that end, they fillet scores of "musical gems". A matsutake reveals itself and joins in. John Cage cooks. The table is set, the meal ready to eat. Initially unobserved, Erik Satie (temporarily brought back to life by piece No. 9 from Otte's "The Book of Sounds") descends from the ladder leading directly into Cage's kitchen. Satie, hungry for something new (Vous m'avez appelé? J'ai faim!), is invited by his initially perplexed friends to share their culinary feast of musical notes. Dessert in Cage's "Inner Landacape Kitchen" culminates in the elegant grand finale, the "Inaudible Concerto" performed by the three piano characters.»
