In En Folkefiende (An Enemy of the People, 1882), author Henrik Ibsen exposes, in a very direct and raw way, the collision between individual and collective; the alienation of a man that, confronting a whole city with the truth, learns that it prefers to live a lie.
Family arguments, corruption, political manipulation, people's assemblies and stonings, all these happen when Dr. Stockmann, in the first act of the play, finds out that the water of the municipal health baths (one of the town's main sources of revenue) is contaminated. When all is said and done he also finds that the whole town is rotten to the core but, even so, he insists on staying in order to "educate" society; believing that, one day, the townspeople will grow to be better: as individuals and as a people. Is that possible? Is every citizen free in the democracy they're a part of? Who truly holds the power?
