TRÊS DEDOS ABAIXO DO JOELHO

At the Torre do Tombo archive, Tiago Rodrigues found a vast compilation of material related to censorship on theatre during the fascist regime of the Estado Novo. Among thousands of theatre texts, subject to examination by the censors of the Secretariado Nacional de Informação, Tiago Rodrigues was particularly interested in the reports written by censors where they explained the cuts or bans from the texts and scenarios.
Ironically in a grand reversal of parts, Três Dedos Abaixo do Joelho turns the censors into playwrights, using their reports as the text of a venue where the actors form a poetic and absurd censorship machine. In a certain way, the legacy of those who oppressed artistic and political freedom becomes an instrument for rediscovering the danger and importance of theatre in society.
