In the Greek tragedy “The Suppliants”, Aeschylus tells the story of fifty sisters that, having been forced to marry fifty cousins against their will, flee Egypt by boat, crossing the Mediterranean, and disembark in Greece, where they plea for asylum.

We don’t need to search very hard to find current reality in certain myths or theatre plays. A journey like the one described above could be headlining any evening news programme of today.

In this rewrite, penned by Sara Barros Leitão, we reflect upon the European project, borders, pacts of hospitality, shelter and integration.

“Suplicantes” is a tragedy — because only tragedy can explain the world of today — and it is fiction — for only emotional detachment from individual stories can allow us to understand the universal quality of these questions.
