SPACE QUARTET

Music

Space Quartet, as an album and/or artistic project, marks a new horizon in the continuous musical explorations of Rafael Toral. Through the course of the years, the musician, internationally renowned, developed an approach to jazz marked by the abstract electronics.
In the context of a quartet (almost) typical, Space Quartet presents Rafael Toral in the molodic feedbacks and amplifiers, instruments in which he specialized himself.Accompanying him is Nuno Torres, a saxophonist of high flexibility, capable of respecting the tradition of the instrument, but also of going into new techniques, allowed by the experience in numerous groups of free improvisation in an international setting. In a more radical extension of his vocabulary, Nuno Torres will also use electronic instruments. Closing the quartet is the versatile Hugo Antunes in the contrabass and the inventive drums of João Pais Filipe, that also plays gongs and bells of his own authorship.
The music develops according to the free decisions of the musicians over the established of discovered materials, which distinguishes the music of Space Quartet from the usual improvisation music. The result is a feeling of flux and continuous movement of renovation, which unfolds into new places, through the spirit of the matter, from jazz-rock to ambient music and, according to Rafael Toral, "singing standards from another planet".
