Ricardo Toscano is an imposing figure of our musical present, a singular voice who expresses himself through the alto saxophone with the same vim and vigour with which the most vivid throats sing or speak or scream our feelings. Rui Miguel Abreu, Zé dos Bois Gallery
Last year, after navigating the more classic forms of trios or quartets, Ricardo Toscano dared to approach John Coltrane's masterpiece A Love Supreme' as an unprecedented septet with two drumkits. And now, this penchant for fitting squares into circles, pyramids into cubes, spheres into cones, has led the young master of the alto to create a Double Trio for this concert taking place at Teatro Viriato, as part of the Viseu International Spring Music Festival.
This ensemble includes Demian Cabaud and Carlos Barreto's double basses, and the drums of Marcos Cavaleiro and João Pereira. It is an unprecedented meeting between this double trio of veteran and young musicians, experienced and daring, adventurous and solid, fostered by Ricardo Toscano, a musician who isn't afraid to go where no one's gone before, play what no one's heard before, and using music as a space for reflection and action, for thought and speech. As a space of invention.
