“Quem vai para o Mar não volta a Terra” is the story of a family. It tells a tale about codfish – the most Portuguese of fishes that also speaks Norwegian – about the lands of Dão-Lafões and the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, off the coast of Canada. In these lands where the weight of nostalgia and longing are an intrinsic part of being, of one’s very soul, homecomings have an acrid taste – bitter and salty. The taste of cod. The taste that’s part of our history. The history of men that chose the cold, fog and loneliness of a harsh life over the waters of the Atlantic. A loneliness they carry forever. Even in a house brimming with life, surrounded by family, they prefer to be alone, thinking, always, of returning, sailing away, fishing. Fishing to escape the rest of the world; fishing to escape themselves. In these lands where the weight of nostalgia and longing are a part of oneself.
