PLAY, THE FILM

The story of a ventriloquist's love for a vaudeville artist, made eternal a the 1920's film, The Great Gabbo is recovered by a collective of artists that decide to create, live and in real-time, a new soundtrack for this perennial musical. They (de)construct the film through theatre, while also doing absolutely everything to it: they cut, splice, reverse and dub without prudishness towards cinephilia.
The dubbing, faithful in essence to the original story, astonishes us with both its humour - present in content, intonation, the new music used - and its unveiled surprises, like the appearance by Cais Sodré Cabaret. The most interesting fact, though, is perhaps that Play, the film is neither a film nor a theatrical play, but rather a dislocated look over both artistic idioms that fits into the unexplored gap between them...
