The newest project by João Paulo Esteves, portuguese lyrical pianist, is a veritable manifest of freedom. Music is completely improvised while, at the same time, being anchored to the experience of three musicians described by the diversity of musical idioms that define them. It should come as no surprise then, that from the gathering of João Paulo and the other two, more active, musicians of the jazz scene, João Lencastre (drums) and Nélson Cascais (double bass), something so unique stemmed forth. They create a multifaceted kind of music, capable of expressing several emotions and moods. Their starting point is the classic jazz piano trio but with one very poignant difference: the usual instrumental hierarchy - that relegates double bass and drums to a place of secondary importance - is utterly subverted. For these musicians, what matters is the communication between three equals, and the music evolves from that conversation. A happy encounter of musicians from different generations, united by their will to keep creating music that is both challenging and alive!
