On 17 January, 1974, the multimedia artist Ernesto de Sousa threw a party in commemoration of the 1 000 011th Anniversary of Art in Portugal, at the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra (CAPC). On 17 January, 2021, we opened Teatro Viriato's season with the Fluxus tradition of celebrating the Anniversary of Art, with the help of our long-time partners such as Cine Clube de Viseu, Grão Vasco National Museum, Vale do Côa or ZDB, along a handful of artists who took the stage for concerts, shows, readings and happenings which ended up being broadcasted online because of the national quarantine due to covid-19 pandemic.
This year we're back to Viseu to celebrate the Anniversary of Art, in partnership with the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra and the Café do Teatro. We invited three illustrators from the Centre region of Portugal (Ana Biscaia, Beatriz Rodrigues and Rosário Pinheiro) to make portraits of their favourite female authors and feminists, to exhibit at the Café do Teatro (which currently shows 13 portraits of 13 male writers in tile panels). The exhibition "Mulheragem" will feature letters from female authors to other female authors of their choice, in a dialogue of generations, styles, geographies, and desires.
By filling up the public space with images of the heroines responsible for our emancipation, liberation, and place in the world, we aim to help tell and remember the several stories of so many leading women that sometimes remain in the shadows, hidden by the (usually male) heroes and artists of the official canon.
