In 1961 Abelaira wrote: "I hope that in 50 years' time 'The City of Flowers' will no longer be read". His wish, however, was not fulfilled. Hence this play. Joana Craveiro
The utopias, dreams and political aspirations of young people from different eras, under the inspiration of Augusto Abelaira's 1959 novel "A Cidade das Flores" (City of Flowers). Set in Florence, at the time of the rise of Benito Mussolini's fascism, this book has inspired Joana Craveiro, leading the director to reflect on the resistance or active struggle against authoritarian systems - old and new - and a certain inertia that sets in. An inertia which, in times past, was called conformism, resignation or even collaboration.
"Juventude Inquieta" crosses several generations of actor-creators on stage, engaging in the same set of questions: how do we fight the rise of fascism? How do we move forward from here? Is there a City of Flowers waiting for us?
