Some of the problems from the age of carquejeiras (women that carried bundles of Pterospartum tridentatum) — 19th century and the first half of the 20th — are, to this day, motive to stand up and protest. Others are a bit more difficult to relate to.

In a digital era where we bear witness to the monetization of the body and its hyper-sexualisation, it is urgent to think about the carquejeiras of the modern day. But we should also preserve and honour the often invisible memory of those “human hedgehogs”, an epithet shared by those women that, in bygone days, climbed the Calçada da Corticeira, in the city of Porto, carrying on her backs a weight equivalent to twenty Ultra HD TV sets.

Between repetition, gestures and breathing, the creator shares her anxieties as a woman, fighting for all those who are and those who whished they could be.
