From the real-life deportation ordeals of Portuguese citizens, living in Canada and the USA since childhood, sent back to the Azores, Dinarte Branco and Nuno Costa Santos created the play I Don't Belong Here.
This project, born from a challenge thrown by Observatório dos Luso-Descendentes, gathers professional actors and some people who actually went through the agonizing event of repatriation. Together, they developed the text and play resorting to some degree of biographical reconstruction.
The vague, far-off, memory of an insular home, the departure of families to North America, adolescence, growing up, personal affirmation, the fall into a world of crime, the present day life on the island far away from family, friends and their true places of comfort are some of the moments, deftly and poignantly, brought to the stage.
