Histórias do Bosque de Viena is one of the most famous plays of Austro-Hungarian author Ödön von Horváth. Written in the tradition of the Vienna popular Theatre, the play subverts the genre (normally inoffensive) aiming biting, scathing criticism at the intolerant, selfish and petty bourgeois community, in a time of deep economic crisis and generalized unemployment.
Accompanied by Strauss' waltz, the author tells the story of several people from the 8th district of Vienna, namely, Mariana, a young naïve girl, daughter of a toy shop owner, that breaks off her engagement with the butcher Óscar, after falling in love with Alfredo, a spineless gambler and parasite who is in a relationship with Valéria, owner of the tobacconists on the same street. In this play one can find the principal themes of Horváth's Theatre: love, death and money. In a community that chooses stupidity, lies and greed as a path to tread, hope is the first to perish...
