GERTRUDE

THEATER

Based on Hamlet, Simão Do Vale creates a new play and develops it through the female character of Gertrude. The young creator, who has been building his career in Italy, takes the relationship between Hamlet and his mother - wrapped up in "incestuous bed sheets" - and places it at the centre of a dramaturgy as dangerous as the fates of the characters. His purpose is not to illuminate this opaque redoubt, but to inquire into its perturbing complexity, its body and power.
The director is accompanied by Italian actress Fiammentta Bellone thickening the isolation of Gertrude, foreign queen in a court that speaks Portuguese. The play joins two languages and takes advantage of two magnificent translations.
Note: The show is presented in Portuguese and Italian, subbed in Portuguese. The subtitles were object to subtle alterations.
