FROM AFAR IT WAS AN ISLAND

The newest creation by João Fiadeiro gets its title from a children's book by italian designer Bruno Munari. In this work, Munari notes that perception is closely associated to context and relation, sufficing a small shift in perspective or scale for a line to turn into a road, a speck of dirt into a planet, a stone into an island.
From this notion, and some perception games presented in the book, João Fiadeiro creates a choreographic dramaturgy where, from afar, what the performers say and do appears to make sense. But as time carries on, we understand that they are not going anywhere and represent nothing more than their own presence. They shift and move towards some place.  But the place where they're going is the same place they've never left. A place where time is, at the same time, suspended and constantly expanding. A place where end and beginning get confused, within and without are inverted and where middle and fringe merge.
