THEATER
How do the generations that didn't live through portuguese colonialism directly relate to the memories of their parents? Does nostalgia get passed along from parents to children, or are the memories locked in key-less chests that no one cares to open? What's the relationship between the younger generation and the decolonization process and the 25th of April? What idea of Africa became imprinted on these families? And what about stories outside these colonialism boxes...? Stories of those who returned afterwards, do they exist?
These are some of the questions that, from the beginning, give shape to Filhos do Retorno, a Teatro do Vestido production created from the testimonies of a generation (or more than one generation) that, while not having lived through portuguese colonialism have, nevertheless, experienced it through the memories of parents and extended family. And, together with these memories of colonialism and decolonization, this show brings forth another unique piece of history that is not written during the colonial experience but afterwards, while building a new country.
A show that aims to be a transformative experience for those who make it as well as for those o see it. For it touches on a troubled and troublesome history.Joana Craveiro
