If there could ever be a manifesto authored by this collective it could be summed up by the desire to produce a real time group language without a single prewritten, prerehearsed note. Hence, the reference to Beckett in their name: "No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better."
Fail Better! is the end result of uniting two formerly existing musical projects: the Oporto duo made up by João Guimarães (saxophone) and João Filipe (percussion) that, last year, created one of the most interesting jazz albums made in Portugal (Ancestral, Sonoscopia Records 2012) and the trio THE NAP, made up by the aforementioned percussionist and Coimbra musicians Marcelo dos Reis (guitar) and José Miguel (double bass). Luís Vicente (trumpet) completes the formation, adding a rich timbre quality while expanding the expressive possibilities of the quintet, whose music range can bridge quite distinct musical landscapes, sometimes closer to jazz, sometimes taking pieces from apparently irreconcilable sources such as post-rock and free improvisation with roots in contemporary music.
