ENSAIO PARA UMA IMAGEM - Amália Rodrigues e Augusto Cabrita - 1967

EXHIBITION

This exhibition is the end result of a challenge, issued by Teatro Viriato, that I had the indubitable pleasure of accepting. On one hand, I could help build an exhibition created from the private collection of my grandfather, photographer Augusto Cabrita; and, on the other, I could have the satisfaction of knowing that all visitors would have something never seen before revealed to them.

Ever since the month of January Teatro Viriato's foyer hosts the exhibition "Ensaio para uma imagem: Amália Rodrigues e Augusto Cabrita - 1967". The display reveals portraits of Amália Rodrigues taken at a photo op in Alentejo, 1967 by Augusto Cabrita, as well as a gramophone that accompanies the singer in one of the resulting images. These photographs are also part of the iconic jacket for the record Formiga Bossa Nossa, released by Valentim de Carvalho, in 1969.
This exhibition was created apropos the centennial commemorating the birth of Amália Rodrigues, celebrated in 2020. António M Cabrita, the grandson of Augusto Cabrita and curator, had the concern of gathering a set of unique images that, beyond never having been put on display in Portugal, help set in indelible immutability, that single ephemeral moment  in time that no one else witnessed, besides Amália Rodrigues and the photographer himself.
