EINS ZWEI DREI

CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS

After his magnificent Hallo, Martin Zimmermann returns to Teatro Viriato with Eins Zwei Drei, a contemporary re-imagining of a clown trio: the presumptuous and smart-alecky Whiteface, the naive and good-natured Auguste and the insane Maladroit who, without exception, always causes trouble.
Eins Zwei Drei promises to be an absurd and agitated tragicomedy that bewilders the senses with its noncommittal intensity and communicative humour. The scene takes the audience to some kind of ultramodern museum where the characters fight for survival - bodies mix and mingle tearing conventions apart, in an attempt to break every limit. Strange figures and objects, straight out of a parallel universe, populate the entire dramaturgy, reminding us that nothing is how it appears.
In the last two decades, Martin Zimmermann invested in a New Circus career defined by a strong visual component and the absence of words. His work revisits the classical patterns of circus and transfigures them with the help of other artistic domains, such as contemporary dance, theatre and music.
