To mark the occasion of John Cage's 100th anniversary (2012), Casa da Música invited choreographer Rui Horta to create a piece about Sonatas and Interludes, one of Cage's reference works for prepared piano. A solo for a "prepared body" in conversation with a prepared piano.
To play the 20 short pieces of Sonatas and Interludes, the piano follows a rigorous preparation, each one clearly described in the score sheet by Cage, and the instrument is invaded and contaminated by all manner of small objects that give it a unique sound. A process that made Rui Horta ponder upon the preparation of the body for the complexity and perfection of a choreographical performance. Danza Preparata is, therefore, a piece reduced to the purest dimension of choreography, a huge challenge where body and music articulate in symbiosis and where strangeness reigns.
