Cucina Povera is the solo project of Maria Rossi, a Luxembourger/Finnish artist, that perfectly mirrors, in a hallucinatory and ethereal way, the characteristics of the culinary tradition with which it shares the name.
Just like in this cooking style, colloquially called by Italians "l'arte dell'arrangiarsi", Cucina Povera's music uses the humblest ingredients and simplest techniques with ingenuity, turning an apparent lack of resources into something exquisite. Cheap synthesizers, skewed loops and heavily processed voices flow in an oneiric stream of consciousness that brings to mind the distinct legacy of Fonal's freak-folk approach, Orphan Fairytale's sense of enchantment or even that pre-sleep state of Grouper's songs, yet, through all this evident inspiration, the artist manages to define her own style and attitude. Experience plays a part in crystallizing this unique vision, since she has several records under her belt, published by labels such as Night School or Primordial Void, and collaborated with artists like Haron or Ben Vince. Cucina Povera comes to Portugal to perform at Teatro Viriato and OUT.FEST in the aftermath of Seesteyttää', a record that glides over one's worries, providing an escape from the frenzy of daily life as a ritualistic practice. Pure magic.
