Considered one of the most disquieting and vibrant symbols of the Portuguese language in song, the Lisbon born Carmen Souza has taken the tradition of the Cape Verde islands (from where her family originates) and through the unique circumstances of diaspora has built an eclectic artistic program which appears to be one of a kind in the international music panorama. African-Cuban music, jazz, morna and other references forged through innumerable fusions of rhythm, are synonymous with her name.
Her new record entitled Kachupada allies the memories of political prisoners to the emancipatory gesture of jazz, traversing the rhythmic richness of the islands and exulting life, youth and family. An energetic and focused demonstration of creative prowess.
And because at a birthday one should always expect gifts, at the end of the stage concert, Carmen Souza performs for the audience a few more themes, but this time, in the foyer.
