The "Rooster of Barcelos" is the most popular Portuguese souvenir. It is sold in a myriad of forms: bric-a-brac, keychains, fridge magnets, postcards, etc. In "Old Cock", the rooster comes to life. Haughty, he tells us his story - how he saved a wrongly accused pilgrim from the gallows. But that is not enough, he demands an explanation to his origins and who better to enlighten him than Salazar (in deepfake form), the dictator that kept Portugal under the heels of fascism for more than forty years. And that's how the rooster learns that he was just one element of the manipulative nationalistic fiction that Salazar made up. The Rooster claims back his vocation as a dispenser of justice, turning his thirst for vengeance towards the populist dictator.
"Old Cock" was written for Jorge Andrade by American writer Robert Schenkkan, winner of a Pulitzer and two Tony awards.
