In By Heart Tiago Rodrigues teaches a poem to ten individuals who have never seen the show before and have no knowledge of the verses they will be memorizing in front of the audience. While he teaches them, the stage director recounts stories about his, almost blind, grandmother, intermingled with tales about writers and book characters who occupy wooden boxes on stage.
For every two verses learnt, new unlikely connections emerge gradually answering the mystery of why were these ten poems, specifically, chosen.
By Heart, a show that garnered high acclaim in Paris, is a play about the importance of transmitting and retaining words and ideas through oral tradition/interaction. Ultimately, this piece serves as recruitment for a "resistance movement" and ends only when the ten "guerrilla warriors" know their poems... by heart.
Also during this season, theatre company Mundo Perfeito - one of the current highlights of the portuguese theatrical landscape - will regale the Viseu audience with their show Bovary.
