Mainly known for his work as a painter, Álvaro Lapa remains an almost secret writer that we urgently need to reread. That's the self-imposed task of visual artist João Sousa Cardoso that, in this new incursion through the oeuvre of the author, saves Barulheira from the abyss of silence. In an essay with several voices, Sousa Cardoso and the actors search for Lapa's polyphonic text, a weave of inner monologues, diary styled passages and small narratives that revisit figures of the writer's personal mythology, and some segments evocative of Artaud, celebrating the pre-cultural vitality that is born of the unbridled experimentation between body and language. After Raso como o Chão - staged at Teatro Viriato in March 2013 -, Barulheira deepens the reflection on the fundamental types of theatrical construction, imagination, Eros and freedom in Portugal, keeping all the edges between artistic disciplines quite sharp.
