AS CRIADAS

THEATER

Written by Jean Genet in 1947, the play describes the monumental efforts of imagination that two maids (sisters) make in order to rid themselves of their luxurious mistress. They plot the murder of their Madame, indulging in sadomasochistic games of role play. The mistress is a character in agony, willing to perform the biggest sacrifices in the name of love. The relationship between the three is clearly characterised by a love / hate dichotomy.
Based on an unpublished translation that Luísa Costa Gomes created from the play's first version - for the very first time performed in Portugal - stage director Simão Do Vale once again plunges into the female universe, with a play that is often labelled as an exposure of social inequalities but that he himself sees as a show "about our attempts of casting off the shackles of our imprisonments through the power of imagination. That sinful little creature that joyfully inhabits our heads".
