Dance
The students of Escola de Dança Lugar Presente will take to the stage, at Teatro Viriato, between the 24th and the 27th of June, in order to celebrate and homage the magnificence of 20th century artists.
The 20th century was a period of great changes on a political, social, scientific and cultural level. Art accompanied and expressed those changes, radically breaking with previous aesthetics.
That century also saw the creation of provocative works that agitated society, allowing for an opening up of mentalities. We have prime examples of that in Jazz and Rock'n'roll music, the poetry of Fernando Pessoa and the paintings of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali or even Paula Rego.
It was the same in the domain of dance, many paradigms were shattered, so that new values could be built through the works of outstanding choreographers, that used dance in a controversial manner, equally revealing of the contradictions people suffered through in this turbulent century.
Some of these notables are Vaslav Nijinsky, Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Pina Bausch and Yvonne Rainner, among many, many others. From the hands of these choreographers springs forth a body and a dance that expresses the issues of the contemporary world.
The oeuvre of some of these artists served as inspiration and theme to the works that will be presented on the aforementioned days and we hope that they're evocative of the fascinating creative richness of 20th century dance.
Integrating these showings from Escola de Dança Lugar Presente, but with a distinct theme, we will present a programme that includes a choreographic creation, authored by António Cabrita, performed by the graduating students of this year's secondary education dance course. The choreographer was inspired by folk traditions, and how people socially experience dance, to build a contemporary piece with this group of young performers. This programme will conclude with the reprise of Filipa Francisco's choreography created for last year's graduating students.
