AH, OS DIAS FELIZES

THEATER

Under a merciless sun, a woman embedded up to her waist in a mound of earth, acts like her condition is the very epitome of normalcy. Falsely good-humoured oratory and a highly ritualized daily routine are her only responses to the cruel unusualness of her circumstances. Winnie is her name. Willie is the sleepy husband to whom she directs her incessant prattling.
More than fifty years after the premiere of Ah, os dias felizes (Happy Days), Samuel Beckett still manages to surprise, intrigue and disturb us. The play is staged by Nuno Carinhas that discovered in its timed immobility and the dryness of its text a surprisingly fertile metaphor, capable of incorporating within: the human condition the game of theatre acting or a devastated civilization.
